This month we are going to use a community garden to teach our preschoolers that “I can thank God for everything.” Wow, there is so much goodness in that one statement! First of all, I can thank. Choosing to be thankful is the road to contentment, joy, and peace. And we want our preschoolers to have all of that goodness in their lives. Second, I can thank God. Thanking God is how we acknowledge the One giving us all the good in our lives. And third, I can thank God for everything. Yes, even the not so good stuff. When we thank God for everything, we are showing God that we believe He can use ALL things for His purpose and nothing is too big for Him. We want our preschoolers to know they can thank God for everything. We want them to experience the contentment, joy, and peace that comes from a thankful heart.

Everything we have comes from God. He is faithful to provide what we need. And even more than what we own, God can also provide what we need to face whatever happens in our life. God has proven time and again that we can trust Him no matter what. We can complain or become jealous of what others have . . . or we can choose to respond with contentment, knowing that God has a plan for our lives.

Story Focus: I can thank God for food. Next, we see how the Israelites learned to truly depend on God and be thankful for every bite of food they ate. These people had to wait for food to drop from the sky – literally. We can thank God for our food, too.
In week three, we head to Exodus 16:2-21, 17:1-7 with a look at how God’s people responded while they were traveling through the wilderness. God had rescued them from slavery in Egypt, yet when they found themselves in uncomfortable situations, they complained that God didn’t care about them. They even said they wanted to return to Egypt! In spite of that, God continued to meet their needs in the wilderness and provided what they needed the whole time.
Bottom Line: Don’t miss out on what you have now. If we’re only thinking about what we DON’T have, we might miss out on celebrating the ways God is taking care of us. It’s all too easy to look at our present circumstances and think we need something else to make us happy. God has something different in mind for us. Contentment is finding the joy in what God has provided here and now. We pray that kids will start seeing the good in their lives rather than complaining and missing out.
Key Question: What is good in your life right now? People can lack contentment for two reasons. First, they’re looking forward to something they want. And second, they’re looking backward to a time when they thought life was better. Yet when it comes to finding contentment, all of us should strive to be aware of what God is doing in our lives right now. We hope that kids will begin to see how God cares for them, no matter what they might be facing. Partnering with parents is always important for IBC, and it can be especially helpful in times of uncertainty. Consistent communication builds trust, and it also equips you, parent, to have spiritual conversations at home. Below are a couple of tools to help you connect digitally with IBC Kids during this time.
